GhostStripe: Invisible optical attack on traffic signs misleads autonomous vehicles

chaumian · x · 2026-09-01

This paper presents GhostStripe, an attack system that uses LEDs and the camera's rolling shutter effect to create invisible adversarial stripes on traffic signs. These stripes mislead traffic sign recognition systems in autonomous vehicles. Real-world tests show the attack can stably spoof recognition results in up to 94% of frames, posing potential life-threatening risks. Countermeasures at the sensor, model, and system levels are discussed.
