Census Data: AI Has Minimal Impact on Employment So Far

New US Census Bureau data from hundreds of thousands of firms indicates AI has had negligible impact on total employment levels.
- Employment Shift: Between Dec 2023 and Feb 2024, 2.8% of AI-using firms hired more, 2.6% hired less, and 94.6% saw no change. By late 2025, the split was 2.3% increase, 2.0% decrease, and 95.7% no change.
- Task Impact: 44% of firms say AI supplements employee work, 10% say it replaces old tasks, and 11% say it creates new tasks.
- Usage: Generative AI is primarily used for writing/editing docs (85%), searching info (50%), summarizing (45%), and coding (13%).
