OpenClaw 2.0 ships its biggest release ever: 933 contributors, 16K+ PRs

OpenClaw has released its largest-ever update, v2026.8.1: 933 contributors (569 first-time), 16,000+ pull requests — roughly half of all merged code in the project's history — with a rare seven-week freeze for the release. The product shifts from a geek-oriented Agent Runtime toward a general-purpose agent that's easier to install and run long-term.
Key changes: setup auto-detects existing ChatGPT/Claude subscriptions, API keys and local models; the browser app becomes the primary entry point with persistent progress cards for agent and subagent state; sessions can migrate across local devices, paired machines and Cloud Workers; Shared Cloud Sessions and Shared Gateway enable multi-player, multi-agent workspaces; Active Memory, background memory consolidation and Self-learning let the agent accumulate experience into Skills autonomously; experimental Swarm runs multiple subagents in parallel.
Security got the densest rework: masked Private Credential Requests, one-time authorizations, plugin security-audit display and fine-grained team permissions. The article also traces OpenClaw's origin (Peter Steinberger wanted to command his PC remotely), its rise past 388K GitHub stars, China's "hundred lobster war" (QClaw, ArkClaw, AutoClaw, CoPaw, KimiClaw and 14+ others), and the real-world pain of deployment, unstable upgrades, token costs and security risks.
