Report: OpenAI buys thousands of Mac minis to train computer-using agents

According to The Information, OpenAI is purchasing tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studios, while Anthropic is renting similar hardware via AWS. Instead of using them for standard GPU pre-training, both labs are reportedly deploying these machines to train agents that operate computers autonomously.
The strategy makes technical sense: pre-training is a raw math problem suited for GPUs, whereas training agents to click, read screens, and learn from trial-and-error is fundamentally a memory problem. Apple's unified memory architecture, which allows CPU and GPU to share a single memory pool, is uniquely efficient for this specific task. The Mac mini, not designed for AI, has accidentally become the optimal form factor.
Notably, OpenAI's decision to buy outright suggests a commitment to permanent infrastructure, while Anthropic's rental approach indicates a hedged strategy.
