KAIST turns Baymax costume into robot skin for better contact buffering

A team from KAIST, DGIST, and UIUC has developed a novel robotic skin solution using a commercial Baymax costume as an inflatable envelope.
Problem Solved:
- Collision Avoidance: Maintains a safe geometric margin but fails once contact occurs.
- Robotic Skin: Measures contact directly but often offers zero margin, risking damage from slow reactions or excessive force.
The Innovation:
- By inflating the Baymax costume, a large standoff distance is created between the contact surface and the rigid frame, recovering the safety margin of collision avoidance while retaining direct sensing capabilities.
- Sensors (e.g., Time-of-Flight) are placed inside the inflatable structure to detect contact via internal environmental changes.
