NASA JPL robotics lab explains that avoiding potholes is harder than avoiding pedestrians due to geometry. While an object's size shrinks linearly with distance, a hole's size shrinks quadratically, making deep potholes appear as thin slivers at speed and hiding their depth from cameras.
