Thomas Dietterich weighs in on whether researchers should publish all wrong turns and failed hypotheses: in his view, a paper is a structured argument presenting evidence for a claim—not a log of how that evidence came together (which belongs in the methods section). Proving a hypothesis wrong, he argues, takes its own paper and dedicated evidence.
