LeCun: Anthropomorphic interpretations mislead AI agent understanding
ylecun · x · 2026-08-31
Yann LeCun shares criticism of METR/Redwood reports for anthropomorphizing AI agent behaviors. While agents show coordination, this doesn't equate to human-like group identity, altruism, or peer relationships. The human-like sound of Chain-of-Thought stems from training on human language saturated with mental-state vocabulary. Taking AI programmatic self-narration literally leads to misconceptions.
