OpenAI and Anthropic Buy Thousands of Macs for Agent Training
量子位 · wechat · 2026-08-31
OpenAI has purchased tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio units, while Anthropic is renting them via AWS, specifically for training "computer-use agents." This surge has driven Mac sales up 29%, making it Apple's fastest-growing product line.
The unified memory architecture of Apple's M-series chips eliminates data transfer bottlenecks, and the thermal design of Mac mini/Studio suits long-duration reinforcement learning tasks. Apple held a rare enterprise event to promote local AI computing and supports clustering via open-source projects like EXOLabs. Nvidia views Apple as its biggest competitor in local AI and has launched the DGXSpark in response. Due to industry-wide memory shortages, high-end Macs are out of stock, pushing some companies toward Nvidia alternatives.
