Inside the FDE boom: field engineers as experts or exploited vendors?

The author interviewed FDEs (Forward Deployed Engineers) across big tech, AI startups, small teams and solo consultants to map this AI-era profession, which originated at Palantir and has lately been embraced by OpenAI and Anthropic as well as Chinese firms.
Key findings: FDEs face identity ambiguity (clients call them PMs or "outsourcers"), resistance from frontline staff who see them as tools for headcount optimization — one veteran builds small pilot groups with willing employees to prove AI's value before scaling — plus vague requirements, wildly inconsistent pricing (¥190k/3 months vs ¥2k/10 days for similar projects) and four immature billing models. The author compares FDEs to 1960s systems analysts: chaotic today, but they are delivering how AI actually runs inside enterprises.
