Google's August 2026 Spam Update indicates that the spam team is still alive and writing new algorithms to tackle low-quality content.
Prior to this update, there was speculation that Google had scaled back its search team in favor of Gemini teams, allowing spam content like scaled listicles to rank. However, the recent update suggests the spam team is actually well-resourced and continues to algorithmically hammer spammy domains at scale.
