Investor: Anthropic saw a half-trillion-dollar coding market back in early 2025

Alex Sacerdote, founder of Whale Rock Capital Management, said on the "Invest Like The Best" podcast that by early 2025 Anthropic had identified a $500 billion coding market. Internally, people were spending about $100 a day on tokens—roughly $20,000-$30,000 a year—when Claude Code started exploding. With around 20 million coders worldwide, that alone implies a half-trillion-dollar market, and it was based on 9-month-old technology.
