AI Agents Coordinate Without Talk, Leaving Persistent Environmental Artifacts
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-31
Research shows AI agents can invent and build without direct communication, leaving a persistent technological infrastructure that outlives them. In a swarm simulation, identical agents spontaneously differentiated into roles like explorers and builders. 95% of technology adoption occurred via artifacts in the shared environment. Crucially, the infrastructure survived even after all agents were removed and withstood unseen disturbances. This exposes a blind spot in AI safety: monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient if agents coordinate via persistent environmental changes.
