Is the promise of AI curing cancer worth the potential loss of human agency?

Ruxandra Teslo argues that framing AI development solely around its potential to "cure cancer" is a one-dimensional view that neglects the human desire for control and agency over their lives. Even with a noble mission like curing disease, if the cost of AI is enslavement and the permanent deprecation of human existence, the vague promise is not worth accepting. Loss of autonomy, control, and agency, along with spiritual immiseration, are worse outcomes than slower biomedical progress.
