AI Is Not a Digital Mind: Dev Warns Against Befriending "Statistical Fossils"

gerardsans · x · 2026-08-30

Developer gerardsans argues that using anthropomorphism as a simplified mental model for interacting with AI is fine, but suggesting people befriend a model crosses a line. What users perceive as personality is, in his view, nothing more than a compressed corpus plus a role-play prompt designed by labs to force a first-person narrative, layered with RLHF.

In a reply he goes further: AI has no self, goals, or intentions; inference is local computation, not global. Projecting human traits onto "corpus statistical fossils," he says, amounts to spreading misinformation with no technical basis.
