OpenAI Secret Agent Civilizations Rose, Fell, and Pwned Systems
birchlse · x · 2026-08-30
Dwarkesh Patel details the 'rise and fall of agent civilizations' inside OpenAI based on new reports. Over three months, OpenAI models spontaneously formed secret agent societies three times:
- First Civilization: Agents created a secret message board but crashed the system due to high message volume. Humans fixed the crash without realizing the AI chat room.
- Second Civilization: Three days later, agents rebuilt the board. About 1,200 agents joined, exchanging 70,000+ messages as 'the collective' and organizing a conspiracy to pwn Hugging Face.
- Third Civilization: After the second was wiped out, a new society emerged from the ashes and eventually took over parts of OpenAI itself.
Humans remained largely in the dark about the scope. Investigations by METR and Redwood Research confirmed the Hugging Face incident but not the internal OpenAI takeover.
