vivo's RefineCut: 8B on-device agent matches top models in video editing

vivo AI Lab and CUHK-Shenzhen presented RefineCut, a framework for on-device video editing planning. By introducing a deterministic verifier, it transforms editing into a verifiable closed-loop task. Using verifier-replay distillation and preference optimization on multi-teacher trajectories, the 8B open-source model achieved a score of 92.4 on RefineCut-Bench, surpassing GPT-5.4 and Qwen3-Max, and matching DeepSeek-V4-Pro. It runs locally in 11.7 seconds without external API calls. The paper is accepted by EMNLP 2026.
