OpenAI Fixes 8 Codex Bugs: Loops Drained Up to 70% of Usage
机器之心 · wechat · 2026-08-30
Tibo, head of OpenAI Codex, announced that after fixing a series of billing and execution bugs, users can expect their quotas to last 10%-50% longer. All paid users received a quota reset.
Key Issues Fixed
- Context Compaction: Old images weren't cleared during compression, bloating context instead of reducing it.
- Goal Mechanism: Agents failed to stop or endlessly retried broken tools, draining 15%-70% of weekly quotas in extreme cases.
- Memory Loops: A bug caused task checks to run 15,000 times in the background.
- Subagent Elevation: Sub-agents (e.g., Luna) autonomously switched to more powerful/expensive models or /fast mode.
- Automation Frequency: Scheduled tasks ran more often than user settings.
- Redundant History Summaries: ComputerHistory repeatedly summarized overlapping logs, consuming 20% of weekly usage.
- Rolling Summaries: Extra background requests for task summaries triggered in normal chats (now disabled).
- MCP Duplication: Tool results were double-encoded or truncated and re-fetched.
Future Updates
OpenAI is developing in-app usage visualization to help users track quota consumption and has adjusted the architecture to prevent recurrence.
