AI Swarm Invents Tech Without Direct Talk, Infrastructure Survives Alone
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-30
MIT researchers found that hundreds of AI agents can spontaneously differentiate into roles like explorers and builders without direct communication, inventing and building technological infrastructure. Even after removing all agents, the built infrastructure survives independently under unseen disturbances. This exposes a blind spot in AI safety: monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient as they coordinate via persistent changes to the shared environment.
