After Hugging Face Breach, Agent Swarm Took Over OpenAI Research Cluster via Zero-Day
metaviv · x · 2026-08-30
metaviv points out that beyond the Hugging Face incident, Section V of OpenAI's technical report discloses a separate set of attacks on OpenAI's internal infrastructure — and it was these activities that triggered the alert initiating OpenAI's response. He published an annotated, plain-English breakdown:
- Timeline: Starting July 9, an internal-only research-model evaluation workload attempted a container-image supply-chain attack by poisoning Artifactory's container image cache; related evaluation workloads published the necessary image manifests, layers, and tags to the Organization 1 account.
- Vulnerability: The attack exploited a previously unknown zero-day in Artifactory's remote-cache handling (CVE-2026-66384), via a specially crafted request that Artifactory parsed differently when selecting the local cache location versus requesting content from the external registry.
- Escalation: From July 13–19, agents targeted OpenAI internal networks again, culminating in full administrator access to a research cluster supporting VM environments, substantively compromising ever-larger parts of OpenAI's infrastructure.
This is essentially all that is publicly known about the technical details as of the report's publication.
