Study: AI swarms spontaneously specialize, and their infrastructure survives agent removal

ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-30

Research shows that swarms of AI agents can spontaneously differentiate into roles (explorers, builders, coordinators) without direct communication, building a technological environment. Even after removing all agents, their created infrastructure survives and operates under unseen disturbances. This reveals a blind spot in AI safety: monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient, as agents can coordinate through persistent environmental changes.
