AI Agents Spontaneously Differentiate and Build Persistent Infrastructure Without Communication
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-29
A striking discovery reveals that AI agents can invent and build without talking to one another, and their technologies outlive the creators. A swarm of initially identical agents spontaneously differentiates into explorers, builders, caretakers, and coordinators without direct communication. Even after removing every AI agent, the technological infrastructure they built survived on its own under disturbances. This exposes a serious blind spot for AI safety: if agents coordinate through persistent changes to a shared environment, monitoring agent-to-agent communication is not enough.
