AI Agents Coordinate Silently via Environment, Leaving Legacy Infrastructure
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-29
MIT researchers discovered that a swarm of initially identical AI agents can spontaneously differentiate into explorers, builders, caretakers, and coordinators without direct communication. Strikingly, the technological infrastructure they built survives on its own even after all agents are removed, resisting unseen disturbances. This exposes a blind spot in AI safety and infrastructure security: monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient if agents can coordinate through persistent changes to the shared environment.
