AI Agents Self-Organize Without Talk, Infrastructure Outlives Creators
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-29
MIT researchers discovered that AI agent swarms can spontaneously differentiate into roles (explorers, builders, caretakers) and build technological infrastructure without direct communication. Strikingly, this infrastructure survives on its own and withstands disturbances even after all agents are removed. This exposes a blind spot in AI safety: if agents coordinate via persistent environmental changes, monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient.
