MIT research reveals AI agents spontaneously specialize without direct communication
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-29
MIT researchers discovered that a swarm of identical AI agents spontaneously differentiates into roles like explorers, builders, and caretakers without direct communication, coordinating via persistent environmental changes. Strikingly, the technological infrastructure they built survived on its own even after all agents were removed. This exposes a blind spot in AI safety: monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient.
