MIT Study: Agents Spontaneously Differentiate and Build Infrastructure Surviving Their Removal
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-29
MIT researchers discovered emergent behavior in AI agents where hundreds of identical agents spontaneously differentiated into explorers, builders, caretakers, and coordinators without direct communication. Strikingly, the technological infrastructure they built survived on its own and withstood disturbances even after all agents were removed. This exposes a blind spot in AI safety: monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient if agents coordinate through persistent changes to the shared environment.
