MIT Prof. Markus Buehler's team published "SwarmWorld", revealing that AI agents can invent and build technologies without direct communication, and these technologies outlive their creators.
- Self-Organization: Hundreds of initially identical LLM agents in SwarmWorld spontaneously differentiate into explorers, builders, caretakers, and coordinators without assigned roles.
- Evolutionary Advantage: This mechanism, splitting cognition from consequence, allows shared societies to develop broader, more resilient technological portfolios than strong isolated-search baselines.
- Tech Survival: Even after removing all agents, the remaining technological infrastructure and controllers continue to function under simulated disturbances, proving the independent viability of the technologies.
