OpenAI ends Cursor deal over distillation concerns; direct model access cut off November 12

OpenAI is ending its partnership with Cursor following Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX, which triggered a limited change-of-control window: Cursor's direct access to OpenAI models ends November 12, and upcoming models such as Astra will not be provided.

OpenAI says the decision is based on "our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts." Notably, OpenAI explicitly cites the report that Musk admitted xAI distilled OpenAI data to train its own models — suggesting distillation concerns may be the real motive. The conflict between Elon and Anthropic thus enters its next phase.
