Musk Confirms Under Oath xAI Used OpenAI's Models to Train Grok
VraserX · x · 2026-08-29
Per The Verge, Elon Musk testified in a California federal courtroom that xAI used OpenAI's models to improve its own. Asked whether xAI had distilled OpenAI's technology, he deflected saying "generally all the AI companies" do so, then answered "Partly" when pressed.
Model distillation uses a larger "teacher" model to transfer knowledge to a smaller "student" — legitimate within a company's own models, but sometimes used by smaller labs to mimic a larger competitor's performance.
