OpenAI ends Cursor partnership after SpaceX acquisition, stoking commodity-trap debate

OpenAI has ended its partnership with Cursor. The official statement cites Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX, with Cursor's direct access to OpenAI models ending November 12. OpenAI says developers relying on its models in Cursor are most affected and pledges strong transition support.
Princeton professor Arvind Narayanan (@randomwalker) commented: the stated reason is a ToS violation, but models are getting commoditized and value capture will increasingly happen at the application layer—no one wants to be reduced to a commodity—and competition regulators should pay close attention. He links his essay with Akash Kapur, "Up the Stack," arguing the bubble debate looks at the wrong place: labs are migrating up the stack beyond model provision, escaping the commodity trap but raising customer lock-in and reduced competition concerns, against $4–8 trillion in projected AI infrastructure investment by the early 2030s.
