According to The Verge, Elon Musk testified in a California federal court that his AI startup, xAI, has used OpenAI's models to improve its own. When asked if xAI had distilled OpenAI's technology, Musk initially deflected by saying "generally all the AI companies" do it, but later confirmed "partly" under pressure. The report notes that model distillation is a common industry practice to transfer knowledge from a larger model to a smaller one, sometimes used by smaller labs to mimic larger competitors.
