Elon Musk confirms xAI used OpenAI’s models to train Grok

Testifying in a California federal court, Elon Musk confirmed that his AI startup xAI has used OpenAI's models to improve its own model, Grok. When asked about the use of "model distillation," Musk replied "Partly" and argued that it is standard industry practice to use one AI model to train another. While distillation is commonly used internally for knowledge transfer, using a competitor's model for distillation exists in a legal and ethical gray area. Musk is currently suing OpenAI, alleging it abandoned its non-profit mission.
