OpenAI cuts off Cursor's model access Nov 12, citing distrust of new SpaceX owner Musk

OpenAI officially announced it is terminating its partnership with Cursor: direct model access ends November 12. The reason is trust — after Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX, OpenAI cites Musk-owned companies' history of contract violations, including Musk's sworn admission that xAI distilled OpenAI data. Cursor founder Michael Truell fired back, noting GPT models account for only 5% of Cursor usage.
The most technically significant line: OpenAI says it bears a "new tier of accountability" for the upcoming model Astra — the first OpenAI model whose cybersecurity capability may reach Critical under its Preparedness Framework (autonomous zero-day exploitation of hardened systems). A coding IDE is the most natural distribution surface for such capability, making deployment control paramount.
Using model access as a weapon has precedent: Anthropic previously cut off Windsurf, OpenAI's Claude API access, and even Cursor itself after xAI employees used it to call Claude. Lesson for developers: coupling IDE, model and cloud to one vendor is risky; keeping configurations portable is now practical advice.
