A recent observation highlights the control model vendors hold over dependent applications: When Elon Musk reportedly sought to acquire the code editor Cursor, OpenAI cut off its API access. Similarly, when OpenAI aimed to acquire competitor Windsurf, Anthropic responded by cutting off Windsurf's API. This illustrates the risk for builders relying on third-party models: if you don't own the weights, you don't own the product.
