Genentech uses Claude with Anthropic's MHS to run autonomous lab experiments

rickwierenga shares that Genentech is using PyLabRobot via Anthropic's newly announced MHS (model hardware standard) — essentially MCP for hardware — toward autonomous lab automation.

In this setup, Claude coordinates a liquid handler, robotic arm, and plate reader to run a BCA assay: analyzing the resulting data, optimizing liquid-handling parameters, and adapting next steps based on results.

PyLabRobot already offers a hardware-agnostic interface for lab equipment, but reliable agent access to the physical world still faces big infrastructure challenges around hardware discovery and capability understanding — what MHS aims to solve.
