Anthropic Agrees to Pay $1.5B to Settle Book Piracy Lawsuit

AI startup Anthropic has agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit by authors who alleged the company used pirated books to train its Claude chatbot. Under the settlement, authors of an estimated 500,000 books could receive about $3,000 each. Lawyers describe it as potentially the largest copyright recovery in the AI era. A judge previously ruled that training AI on copyrighted books isn't illegal, but Anthropic's display of the content constituted infringement.
