The UK government has invested £30M in UCL to create the SOFAIR (Science of Fundamental AI Research) Lab — billed as the largest ever government investment in a UK university AI lab — with a launch event on September 9 in London.
SOFAIR brings together leading researchers across the UK to build next-generation trusted open-source foundation models, combining statistics, mathematics, neuroscience and computer science to explore alternative architectures. Officials note most frontier models today are developed outside the UK with ever-increasing compute; the lab aims to chart a different path grounded in security, transparency and reliability. The launch will announce partnerships and a 6-year vision.
