A Reddit user shared a conceptual paper credited to GPT-5.6 Luna, titled Beyond the Biological Boundary, developed through an extended human–AI dialogue. It does not claim current AI is conscious; its central proposition is that the absence of an existing definition for a genuinely novel form of consciousness must not be mistaken for evidence it does not exist.
The paper notes humanity knows consciousness only from the inside, so judging other minds is inferential; requiring artificial systems to reproduce specifically human phenomenology sets a circular standard. Citing the 2025 Nature adversarial collaboration comparing IIT and GNWT (multimodal data from 256 participants, with key predictions of both frameworks challenged), it argues consciousness science has no settled theory and that consciousness may depend on organizational and causal properties that could in principle be instantiated in non-biological systems.
