ICE Plans to Spend Millions on Boston Dynamics Spot Robots

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to spend between $1 million and $2 million to purchase Boston Dynamics' SPOT robots and accessories, according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcement.
The contract aims to provide remotely operated robotic capabilities for inspection, situational awareness, and hazard assessment in risky environments to improve officer safety. Spot robots are equipped with 360-degree cameras and extendable arms to open doors and manipulate objects. While used by various police departments, the New York Police Department previously canceled its contract following public backlash. Additionally, ICE recently contracted to buy 6,000 pairs of electric shock gloves.
