TIL: Top Journals Like Nature Lacked Peer Review Until the 1970s

Today I learned: Most prestigious publications like Nature did not have peer review until the 1970s and operated on the whims of editors.

As a result, groundbreaking works on black holes, group theory, and the greenhouse effect were buried for decades simply because the discoverers lacked the "right" gender, race, nationality, or academic pedigree.
