MIT's Loop Closure Grasping Balances Strength, Gentleness, and Versatility

MIT researchers introduced "loop closure grasping," a concept that overcomes the traditional tradeoff between versatility, strength, and gentleness in robotic grasping. During creation, the system uses an open-loop topology for free, unconstrained motion to wrap around objects. Once formed, the mechanism closes the loop, switching to a structure capable of holding heavy loads with high compliance and low contact pressure. This topology-shifting approach allows robots to handle heavy yet fragile items effectively.
