Oxford scholar Toby Ord argues that a technological singularity can occur even if absolute gains shrink each generation (e.g., 1, 1/2, 1/3...), provided the total gains are unbounded. He emphasizes that the shrinking of generation time does most of the work in creating vertical asymptotes, requiring the gradient of improvement to approach infinity in finite time.
