Stat/prob ML researcher: top conferences are drowning in LLM papers

didimoney · reddit · 2026-08-28

A statistical/probabilistic ML researcher with a steady record of top publications complains that LLM papers have completely taken over top conferences — at this year's ICLR, you were lucky to find one non-LLM paper per row of ten posters, and workshops are nearly all agentic. NeurIPS workshops tell the same story.

The author is considering AISTATS/UAI as alternatives and reflects that the top 3 venues may never really have been the home for prob/stat ML work — it just happened to be the 'prestigious' venue.
