Judge Blocks Pentagon's Attempt to Blacklist Anthropic as Security Risk
nordicinst · x · 2026-08-28
US District Judge Rita Lin has barred the Department of Defense from designating Anthropic a national security supply-chain risk, ruling the move "illegal and baseless." The decision vacates Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's February order that blocked Anthropic from federal contracts and prohibited military contractors from doing business with the company. Judge Lin called the broad measures imposed on Anthropic unconstitutional retaliation. The ruling also lifts improper sanctions imposed by nine agencies, including the Pentagon and the State Department. While the Pentagon is not required to use Anthropic's models and may appeal, the decision represents a significant legal victory for the AI startup.
