World's first live AI-assisted brain surgery removes tumor

Surgeons at University College London Hospital performed the world's first brain tumor removal with real-time AI assistance. The patient, Rhys Hibbert, had an 11mm tumor on his pituitary gland, located dangerously close to the carotid arteries and optic nerves.
During the procedure, an AI tool analyzed the live video feed to identify critical but hidden vessels and nerves, guiding surgeons to avoid these vital structures while maximizing tumor removal. The operation was crucial to prevent the patient from going blind due to nerve compression.
