Researcher challenges Anthropic's language claims: ~2,500 languages lack real web presence
anas_ant · x · 2026-08-28
The author pushes back on @AnthropicAI's language support claims: if 3,000 languages use standard Unicode but only 500 have meaningful Internet presence, any claim of supporting the other 2,500 is problematic — models can hardly learn languages with virtually no training data.
They argue providers should specify which languages are adequately supported, based on evals or better understanding of training data, to avoid harms to speakers of inadequately supported languages.
