CSCW Paper: How People Make Sense of AI via Method, Mind, and Morality Frames

A forthcoming paper at CSCW 2026 by Jacy Reese Anthis et al. investigates how humans make sense of AI's rapid takeoff. Using computational text analysis of millions of articles and interviews with 57 AI professionals, the study identifies "sociological frames" used to structure collective cognition.
The research highlights three primary debates across which frames are contested:
- Method: Top-down expert systems vs. bottom-up emergent capabilities.
- Mind: Passive tool vs. humanlike "digital mind."
- Morality: Whether to slow down or speed up AI development.
