BBC reports University College London Hospital has performed the world's first brain surgery with live AI assistance. Patient Rhys Hibbert, 48, had an 11mm non-cancerous tumor on his pituitary gland pressing on his optic nerves, threatening blindness; the gland sits dangerously close to the carotid arteries and optic nerves.
During the operation, an AI tool analyzed a live video feed of the surgery and advised surgeons on how to avoid crucial hidden vessels and nerves, allowing them to remove as much of the tumor as safely possible. Hibbert said the patient-safety benefit is clear: "There are no road signs inside our head." Two neurosurgeons called it the first tumor removal in history done with real-time AI guidance.
