Linus fixes driver bug after AI called it 'impossible'
bendee983 · x · 2026-08-28
While debugging a severe bug in the Linux Intel GFX driver, Linus Torvalds' AI assistant repeatedly insisted the task was "impossible and unsolvable," suggesting they write a report instead. Linus persisted, and after 24 debug patches and 18 kernel reboots, he found the bug: a single roundup() that should have been rounddown(). He then tasked the AI with writing the commit message. The author notes that while AI agents are impressive, many tasks still require the curiosity and tenacity of human engineers.
