AI can spot heart disease in women from routine mammograms, study finds

Researchers used a machine-learning model on routine mammograms to successfully identify women with coronary heart disease, high blood pressure or prior stroke, presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Munich, the Guardian reports. Israeli doctors analyzed 97,364 scans from 29,921 women (average age 54); cross-referencing records showed 16% had high blood pressure, 2.5% coronary heart disease and 2.5% prior stroke, and the model reliably identified stroke survivors. Experts say breast screening could become dual-purpose, flagging frequently underdiagnosed heart disease in the hundreds of millions of women screened yearly.
